The Story of Bottled Water / Third Place: Environment + People’s Choice Nominee
The revolutionary 20 minute animation, “The Story of Stuff,” hosted by garbage activist, Annie Leonard, sparked a worldwide debate on the benefits of endless consumption. To address the overwhelming demand to continue this conversation, Free Range Studios and The Story of Stuff Project teamed up to create a series of shorter movies that delve more deeply into various aspects of the materials economy. “The Story of Bottled Water” tells the story of manufacturing demand—how you get Americans to buy more than half a billion bottles of water every week when it already flows from the tap. The film explores the bottled water industry’s attacks on tap water and its use of seductive, environmental-themed advertising to cover up the mountains of plastic waste it produces. The film concludes with a call to ‘take back the tap,’ not only by making a personal commitment to avoid bottled water, but by supporting investments in clean, available tap water for all. This short has been viewed over 1.3 million times since its release in March 2010.
