YBCA Campaign / Honorable Mention : Education

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts presents contemporary art from the Bay Area and around the world that reflects the profound issues and ideas of our time, expands the boundaries of artistic practice, and celebrates the diversity of human experience and expression.
One word used to describe YBCA was “subversive,” This design concept came out of studies around how to visually express this trait. In addition, YBCA was one of the first arts institutions of its stature to champion graffiti and street art, so Volume, Inc. thought it appropriate to commandeer this medium's methodology. They have surreal illustrations hijack banal stock images to deliver the message that art is indeed subversive, but—even more importantly—approachable and fun at YBCA. The campaign helped YBCA reach new audiences who often feel contemporary art is unapproachable or difficult to understand.
The campaign strengthened and deepened YBCA’s relationship with its main audience of off-beat seekers and separated the institution from the increasingly crowded Bay Area museum space.
